This piece closely relates to my first sustained investigation work. For this second House of Cards, I drew inspiration from my dad’s house. While I wouldn’t necessarily describe my relationship with him as fragile, the concept still carries a universality that can speak to experiences beyond my own. I used face cards from the deck to represent both my dad and me.
Everything visible in the final piece is constructed from playing cards. The siding is made from the trimmed edges of the cards, and the pillars use the printed surface of lower-value cards, like twos, because their designs take up less space. I enjoyed working with playing cards so much in my first piece that I wanted to explore the medium again. I think having multiple works that use the same materials will help create a stronger sense of cohesion throughout my portfolio.
This piece also differs structurally from my first one. This time, I focused heavily on the front porch, which not only becomes a defining feature but also allows the entire piece to stand upright on its own, something my previous construction couldn’t do.
