I created the first set of door lamps with the intention of both literally and figuratively shedding light on something hidden. When the lamp is off, the image remains completely concealed; but once the light shines through the layered paper, the intricate door designs are revealed. Almost the entire piece was hand-cut with an X-Acto blade, with the exception of the lace-like trim at the top and bottom. I used clear tape for the assembly, as glue would have caused the paper to warp or wrinkle.
My second edition of the door lamps expresses my original concept more clearly—shedding light on a situation, particularly a difficult home life or harmful living environment. The addition of the broken glass in the doors makes the message more explicit, suggesting that the clean, beautiful exterior may be hiding something fractured or unsettling behind it.
